***SPOILER ALERT! If you want to play along with the game, then don’t read on!***

Item #1 to Not Sell & Private Label on Amazon: Wigzi’s Dual Dog Leash (because it is patented) ***20 POINTS!***

When you come to private label and sell an item on Amazon, it is crucial that you check to see if there are any active patents protecting the design of it. If you manufacture and sell an item that has a patent protecting it, then you risk the following:

1) The holder of the patent can take your item down from Amazon, and you will lose the money you spent on your initial inventory.
2) Amazon may potentially suspend your account for a serious infringement.
3) The holder of the patent can sue you for patent infringement.

Many Alibaba suppliers will manufacture and copy items that have active patents. Just because a supplier is producing and selling an item to you, doesn’t mean that they have the right to do so. A simple and free site to use to when double checking this is Google Patents.

Item #2 to Not Sell & Private Label on Amazon: Beach Towels (because it is seasonal) *** POINTS!***

There are some items that sell very well during specific times of the year. Beach towels sell well over summer. Costumes sell well over halloween. If you are doing product research during these periods of the year, it is easy to stumble onto one of these products and to see it as a great opportunity.

But that would be a big mistake, as the current sales volume is not a good indicator of how the long-term sales will be. Especially as a beginner, it is helpful to pick a product that has consistent sales over the year so you can have more reliable income. There is nothing wrong with selling seasonal products - they can make a lot of money, but they are a more advanced product to manufacture/sell.

Item #3 to Not Sell & Private Label on Amazon: Penis Enlargement Pills (because they are prohibited!) ***20 POINTS!***

Something that I did not realize until I investigated this issue, is that Amazon often do not take action to remove listings of items that are prohibited. I have never tried to sell a prohibited item, so I did not know. What I discovered from talking to Amazon is that while items may be banned, unless they are reported/an official complaint is made, they won’t bother removing them.

But, I still strongly recommend that you don’t sell these products. Because while you may get away with it for a short time, at any point a customer/seller can report your product. If they do this, then Amazon will prioritize the issue and your listing will get taken down: which was why most of the products listed were only a few months old, as the previous ones had been removed.

Item #4 to Not Sell & Private Label on Amazon: iPad Cases (because they are a fad) ***5 POINTS!***

While iPads are unlikely to go “out of style” and stop selling, each year new versions of iPads are released, replacing the previous ones. There is no guarantee of what size they will be, what shape they will be and how thick they will be. If you product a case/accessory designed for one generation of the iPad family, there is no guarantee it will fit the next generation and it is a risky product.

Item #5 to Not Sell & Private Label on Amazon: Essential Oils (because they have higher insurance premiums) ***10 POINTS!***

Once you sell $10,000 in a quarter, you are supposed to have product liability insurance for your product. There are some products that are trickier and more expensive to get insurance for. These are products that:

1) Are designed to be applied to the human body (like essential oils).
2) Are designed to be consumed by people or inserted into the body (like pills).
3) Products that are accident risks (like blenders as they have blades).
4) Products that are potential choking risks (which means you need to be extra careful with products designed to be used for kids).

There is nothing wrong with products that fit this category, but as a new seller, it’s a good idea to stick to products that will cause you less headaches when it comes to this. You can focus on more advanced products like this after your first simpler product.
